The Lausanne Movement noted in an analysis of church planting situations across different countries (Lausanne Global Analysis, November 2017): ‘So if church planting is to be effective in the twenty-first century, church planters must obey Jesus’ first century mandate to ‘make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you’ (Matt 28:19-20a). This, we conclude, is the simplest truth of all about church planting.’

This truth was most definitely evident in the work of Michael and Joy Toogood in their ministry to Soho beginning in 1982 as told in the book, 'Mission to Soho'. The book is a moving account of how this family settled in difficult circumstances to undertake an extremely challenging work for their Saviour. Michael Toogood relates their experiences honestly, relaying their sacrificial commitment to serve a wide range of needs in this most diverse of neighbourhoods. He portrays vividly a number of the characters they served in this area. We also learn about the issues faced in establishing a community of believers in Soho and the value of collaborative working with key agencies. The record of their work also gives us a useful case study in urban church planting. I really enjoyed reading this book and was challenged immensely. In my opinion, 'Mission to Soho' definitely deserves to be read by all those seeking to reach those who are yet to experience the love of Jesus.
