September 2021 marked the 60th anniversary of the publication of the first two titles in the Banner of Truth’s Puritan Paperbacks collection. This series has continued successfully to ‘popularize some of the timeless literary treasure given to the Church’. Taking his lead from Psalm 89:6, Swinnock’s first chapters demonstrate how God eclipses all in His being and His attributes before setting out God’s superlative greatness in His works and His word.The author then proceeds to show emphatically that opposition to God and a lack of appreciation of such a great God is pointless and destructive. Finally, he offers valuable applications pointing the way to a right response to the truths presented. This is a wonderful book in so many ways as Swinnock constantly stuns the reader with one vibrant illustration after another of God’s transcendent greatness. His mastery of language enables him to convey convincingly that God is indeed incomparable and how blessed are those who have come to know Him.
