This book by Tim Chester comprises daily readings between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. The aim is draw the reader to focus and meditate on the death and resurrection of Jesus. To do this, Tim Chester uses prayers and writings from Christians in past centuries, referring to these men and women as part of the great cloud of witnesses that surrounds us. Each day’s reading starts with short verses from the Bible and a brief thought from the author, followed by a passage written by a Christian in the past.

The book is not designed to give detailed explanations of Jesus’ work, so would be less suitable for a very new Christian or someone who is questioning the claims of Christianity. I found this book encouraging, reading the words of Christians through time who have had similar doubts and struggles but have found their Saviour and assurance in Jesus. It has whetted my appetite to learn more about the lives of Christians in the past and to more fully appreciate the spiritual heritage we have that can be all too easy to forget.
