While reading Greenberg’s account of not only the painful experiences that she had to face but also how God has worked through others to minister into her life, I felt very convicted about how poorly equipped I am when it comes to supporting people that have experienced major trauma in their life. Often, we think that these are rare cases, but although the experiences themselves are unique, trauma due to the sins of others certainly is not. What are we doing as Christians to help support these people and build them up in Christ?

A great place to start is educating ourselves on the topic. Greenberg’s book was certainly an educational and insightful book for me to understand the helpful and the unhelpful ways that people have supported her and how I can then equip myself better to support individuals like herself. We also trick ourselves into believing that many of these issues are dealt with and left in the past; however, Greenberg deeply reveals the lasting impact that trauma has on a human soul and how we can support people during trauma, after trauma, and long-after the trauma and initial healing has occurred. She speaks honestly and deeply about the fears and doubts that creep into your mind at unexpected times even years after events have taken place.

Overall this book was an excellent exposition of a life that has been full of pain, but through the grace of God is now full of joy. I would highly recommend this read to anyone who has experienced trauma, loves someone who has, or wants to be able to be a better servant to their neighbour.
