Get this book if you have any doubt about the passion with which Christians should share the gospel, or about the duty of preachers to plead earnestly with people to receive Jesus. In this book a remarkable sermon of Spurgeon’s entitled “Compel them to come in” is reproduced in full in an appendix. Donald Macleod takes this sermon as an example of the urgency with which Christians should address unbelievers concerning their imperative need to turn from their sins, and to receive the salvation and lordship of Jesus. The chapters dismantle one by one the doctrinal objections we may have to offering the gospel to all people in a free and authoritative manner. Throughout we are urged to plead shamelessly with others to receive our Saviour. In the closing chapters there are powerful pointers about how to do that, and what kind of people we ought to be in the endeavour. I found the emphasis on being prepared to labour tirelessly in this work of persuasion particularly challenging.
